Retail & Consumer

What sets the cash registers ringing?

Manufacturers and retailers face an array of challenges in their efforts to reach consumers, from new competitors, alternative distribution channels, global cost pressures and rapidly changing needs to corporate social responsibility. PricewaterhouseCoopers helps you identity the important developments and make the right decisions.

Lease accounting for retailers: The biggest-ever accounting change?

The Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board are currently working together to revise lease accounting standards. The purpose of their efforts is to reconcile treatments under U.S. GAAP and IFRS. A joint discussion paper has been published and the Boards have already received a round of comments from the public. The paper is updated regularly and the most current issue is available here.

The proposed changes are significant:

  • Under the new rules essentially all leases will be capitalised.
  • The new approach will be a "right-of-use" approach.
  • The distinction between operating and finance/capital leases will be removed.

What's your question?

  • How do we effectively combine different distribution channels and make sure they are optimally aligned with our specific strategy?
  • What structures and processes will enable us to position our purchasing, production and distribution for success in a global marketplace?
  • How do we meet the triple bottom line along the entire value chain?
  • How can we use existing business models to exploit consumer megatrends like wellness and sustainability?
  • What are the opportunities, risks and alternatives arising out of regulatory change in the retail and consumer goods industry?
