Increasing administrative efficiency for a social institution


The Rodtegg is a social institution for children, young people and adults with multiple physical disabilities. It offers a broad range of consulting, pedagogical and medical therapeutic services, training, education and work as well as accommodation.

Simplified processes

The Rodtegg was looking for a new, complete IT solution that would optimise internal processes, provide user groups with all the necessary information and avoid redundancies. It also wanted a very high level of automation that would help simplify the complex and manifold administrative tasks with which it is faced.

Detailed specifications

The Rodtegg needed to automate the complex processes in finance and accounting, and salary and resident administration, and it needed to optimise interfaces with the care, accommodation, training, education and works departments. Furthermore, they wanted to have all their files and documentation on digital files.

The challenge: lack of harmonisation among the cantons

Since the advent of the new fiscal equalisation system, the financing of social institutions is organised differently in practically every canton. Each canton has different pricing structures and charging models for every service offered – an enormous challenge for the Rodtegg. For the 150 people in its care, there are ten different ways to invoice items in ten cantons.

A new, complete ERP solution was the only way to meet the Rodtegg's complex requirements. The major criterion for the envisaged solution was that it should be rapidly adaptable to ongoing changes in market requirements.

Forward-looking concept

PwC developed ITworks:CARE, a standardised solution which fully meets the Rodtegg's requirements. The PwC team worked closely with key members of the Rodtegg's staff in an open exchange mode. Experience with similar projects was beneficial to the work and contributed to the successful completion of the project.

Additional support

During the course of work on the project, it became evident that the Rodtegg also needed additional services. The PwC team was able to support the new head of finance and accounting in preparing the half-year financial statements, in setting up a new system of quarterly reporting to the foundation board and in adjusting items in the balance sheet. In addition, PwC experts assisted the Rodtegg in financing negotiations with the Canton of Lucerne, in assessing the institution's risks and establishing an internal control system.

Useful extras

To further optimise processes, the PwC team installed additional interfaces such as ABACUS for ordering meals or charging transport costs. In addition, the integration of QlikView provided management with an overview of the system.


ITworks:CARE is an automated solution that covers all of the Rodtegg's processes and requirements. Due to its broad range of services, PwC was also able to give the Rodtegg valuable assistance in other areas.

Specific know-how

PwC specialises in services for social institutions and non-profit organisations and has gathered experience regarding their needs and challenges on numerous projects. The PwC team was thus able to advise the Rodtegg on best practice it had gleaned from other organisations and in other matters that went far beyond purely technical issues. The specialist expertise and multi-disciplinary support provided by the PwC team also benefits the Rodtegg in other areas, achieving optimisation and simplification of internal processes.
