Brexit: the social security situation since 1 January 2021

Natalia Graf Senior Manager, People and Organisation, PwC Switzerland 22 Feb 2021

Just in the nick of time around Christmas 2020 the EU and the UK reached an agreement for the post Brexit area, including rules for the future social security coordination. Switzerland and the UK have yet to conclude such an agreement.

As of 1 January 2021 the bilateral social security agreement of 1968 is applicable between Switzerland and the UK; until an new agreement is reached.

This old bilateral agreement enables to set up assignments and have the concerned individuals still covered by their home social security system while being basically exempt from the host social security legislation.

For persons working usually in both countries, Switzerland and the UK, the situation may be more challenging and special solutions need to be obtained.

The new agreement will be an agreement of a newer generation, that means it will also cover multistate situations and provide clear rules for the coordination of various insurance branches.

We are closely monitoring any updates and will inform you here. Should you have questions because you have people moving between and working in Switzerland and the UK or because you have UK nationals moving around in Europe, please reach out to us; we will happily discuss possible solutions with you.
