Matthieu Patrice works as Director in Advisory, in Zurich, and in this interview he tells us how he goes aheader and builds trust through recognition.

What is your ‘coaching hack’ in order to build trust?

One of the most important things as a coach is to recognise and understand the different forms of exchange with your coachees – there are a formal platforms like townhalls, team meetings and coaching sessions and there are informal opportunities to connect, such as (digital) coffee or lunch breaks and apéros.

The exchange between people varies – the more informal a meeting gets, the more personal interaction is possible – and with that, a deeper understanding of the personalities that work together in one team. Organising informal meetings can prevent wrong decisions or misunderstandings that can spiral up to company level. Following, coaching for me is – besides the very business driven, professional approach – something personal. Meeting with your coachees on a less formal basis regularly gives people the chance to approach you with non-business topics and on an informed layer. It might help them addressing you then (or at a later point) on a more trustful and personal level, and it might give me the chance to help much sooner.

How do you ensure the realisation of coaching sessions during your everyday work?

I find it very important to stick to the weekly or bi-weekly meetings with my coachees. It’s crucial to not skip the meeting for an important call or any other “higher priority” – your coachees are that high priority! Having fixed, regular meetings that no other work or task will overpower strongly emphasizes the importance of your coach-coachee relationship and the development of your coach. Also, having these regular sessions can enable us as a coach, to have a constant feedback also on a personal level.

How do you show appreciation and recognition for your coachee?

It's very important to understand the goals and targets of a coachee.

The highest form of appreciation and recognition that an employer and a coach can give is to fully support their skills. This can come in many forms: Typical career development courses as well as enabling the coachee to seek further training abroad, where they can combine learning and development while meeting with new colleagues and have fun.

Besides supporting their skills, appreciation and recognition naturally involves some monetary components, but it's very important to take care of all the non-monetary components as well. An important factor for me is giving the coachee an overview on the long-term plan, career step opportunities or further responsibilities for them within the firm. It gives both transparency and enables a feeling of mutual trust.

What is your tip to others for good remote coaching?

Making use of the possibility of seeing each other during video coffees once or twice per week is very important – also, on a personal level. Much more than when working with or for a client, sharing and gathering information through personal interaction, body language, gestures etc. is a crucial when working together as a team.

Remote coaching is not reduced to business calls: Me and my team had a Christmas party with food and beverage boxes sent to our homes to mix cocktails together, and thoughtful little presents that we prepared for each other. It might not be our preferred option – but getting together digitally and enjoying festivities and sharing good times in digital ways is something I advise coaches to invest in. It will strengthen your bond with your team.

What is your favourite PwC value and why?

Trust is the foundation for all of our values. Therefore, I will always emphasize “trust” as the fundamental element, followed by our value “Make a difference”.

I see it as a flow – when there’s trust, this mutual bond between coach and coachee and also on a client level, this will lead us to making a difference. As a core element, trust affects us on all levels: All of our projects are trust based. Trust is at the heart of a firm and gives us the power to create something meaningful together. It's important to work on that and maintain on an everyday basis – and based on that, bringing all of our values to live!
