Luca works full-time as Director Corporate Tax in our Tax and Legal Services offices in Zurich and Basel. Here’s why he thinks there’s no such thing as a coaching hack and what his best coaching tip is.
Why is coaching important for you?
When it comes to coaching, there are many important aspects to consider. On the one hand, you must be physically and mentally present so that the other person feels understood and respected. On the other hand, a successful coaching experience strongly depends on both persons involved.
Coaching is a challenge, too, since you’ll have to always consider the employer’s perspective but also match it with the personal expectations of your coachee, which are often mainly driven by their experience and career aspirations. How can we combine these two views? I assume, openness is the key to success.
Also, good coaching as well as a trustful relationship between coach and coachee is a great support to the latter. It might take time to build such a strong relationship. Gaining each other’s trust will then give room to also address unpleasant things, worries or even failures. Don’t forget to keep the discussion transparent and open-minded. I want my coachee to know, that they can contact me about anything and I’ll support them accordingly.
How do you make time for coaching in your daily work life?
I appreciate my role as a coach and find regularly time for my coachee. If possible, I try to take a moment whenever they approach me. I might not always be available right away which is why I communicate transparently that I would rather schedule a meeting where I can be physically and mentally present.
With my coachee I also arrange fixed, brief meetings twice a week, where we talk about their workload or any other topic that needs to be discussed. As a coach, being present is key, which is why I keep my mobile phone out of sight during coaching sessions, so that notifications or messages will not disturb me.
What’s your coaching hack for new/other career coaches or team leaders?
I think, there is no such thing as a coaching hack. But coaching depends to a great deal on what kind of coach you’ve had yourself and the coaching that you’ve received. Keep and adapt the good experiences and get rid of the more negative ones! And again: take coaching seriously and remember to take time for being present for your coachee.
What’s your coaching tip?
Walk the talk. If you agree on something, do it. Do not expect things from your coachee that you yourself cannot fulfil.
What’s the best thing you have ever experienced as a coach?
The most valued moments for me are when I experience that a coachee, while working on a project together, has integrated my advice and inputs, which then leads to a successful outcome. Seeing how the coachees grow with different challenges and how they enjoy the whole process of it, is very special to me.
What's your favorite PwC value and why:
That would be ‘Care’. There are so many small things that already have an impact on our relationships. Have a coffee together during the day or a beer after work and talk.
