Due to the current COVID-19 situation, a lot of things have changed, also the recruitment process. The old hand shake and face-to-face meetings in the office were substituted with online meeting appointments in the comfort of our home offices. This doesn’t mean it’s a less important moment in your career, it's just different.
Also when applying for your dream job, it’s still crucial, but just different than before. And we want you to be at your very best. That’s why, we came up with these six tips for you to be ready and master your virtual interview like a pro:
1. Dress to impress
Just because you are working from home, does not mean that you should look like you have just gotten out of bed. So dress as you would for an in person interview in the office. And dress your whole self! Would you wear trainer pants with a shirt and blazer, for an interview in the office? Pretty sure, the answer is no, right? So, don’t do it for the online interview. Anticipate things like if you need to stand up, for any reason, awkward moments like this are all over the internet.
If you dress the part, you’ll feel much more confident, trust us!
2. Test your technology (audio, camera, light conditions, battery) and set the scene
Before the virtual interview you should test your equipment and see where the best place at home is for it. Set up the interview scene, open your webcam and check the light, angle and sound. And make sure it’s a quiet place with no distractions.
3. Be prepared and take notes
Just because you’re on a computer doesn’t mean you can search the web for answers during the interview, so avoid clicking around. Prepare and research the company ahead of time and write down notes and your questions for easy reference. Have a notebook, a paper or word open, and be ready to take some notes. You’ll want to write down everything relevant for you.
Tip: if you’re taking notes on the computer, let the interviewer know beforehand.
4. Make “eye contact”
Even though you are doing a virtual interview and seeing your interviewers through a computer screen, that doesn’t mean eye contact isn’t necessary. Avoid looking around the room, checking your phone or any other open tab you might have. Show that you are focused and present.
5. Adopt a good posture & mind your gestures
During your interview try to maintain a professional posture, find the most comfortable chair at home, put your computer on a desk and your back straight. Remember, we are apart, but we can still see your body language.
6. Eliminate Distractions
Whether you sit on your living room couch or in your home office, tidy up your surroundings for the interview and eliminate all distractions. Turn off the TV, silence or turn off your phone, and close any nearby windows to avoid noise.
To sum it up: the key to mastering a virtual interview is proper preparation. From ensuring your technology is working to conducting research before the meeting, sitting down at your computer poised and ready for any and all questions will help set you apart from other applicants. Be authentic and enthusiastic about this new possible chapter in your life.
