Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) poses a significant challenge for every healthcare system in the EU, and currently kills 5,000 EU citizens per day. In our 2022 report, published jointly with EFPIA, we explored how European countries can find ways to create more resilient and equitable health systems that deliver better health outcomes for all. Spain has recently shown how to actively address and promote cardiovascular health, issuing a highly acclaimed national Cardiovascular Health Plan in early 2022. Together with EFPIA and Farmaindustria, we took the opportunity to convene a multi-stakeholder roundtable to shine a light on CVD in Spain, learn from one of the model European countries and explore how these learnings could be implemented further afield.
In «Towards better cardiovascular health in Spain», we summarise the status of CV health in Spain along with the insights from the roundtable discussion, and also highlight the interdependency between CV policies in Spain and at EU level.
Improving the management and prevention of CVD is a vital step forward for European health systems. One thing is clear: it will take collaboration across the entire health ecosystem to achieve this goal. In writing this paper, we have been very encouraged by the clear commitment we’ve seen from across the healthcare world to improve CVD management and prevention.
