Today is Data Protection Day

Susanne Hofmann Data Protection Officer, PwC Switzerland and Liechtenstein 27 Jan 2019

Never heard of it? Introduced by the Council of Europe more than a decade ago, the Data Protection Day reminds us every year that data protection concerns all of us.

Not only does it concern individuals but companies too. The French Data Protection Agency’s recent fine of EUR 50m for Google is a strong reminder that data protection hasn’t stopped being a topic by May 25 last year. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation has made it a permanent item on corporate agendas within and outside the EU.

Today, we recommend five sanity checks that every organization can easily perform:

  1. Get the information! Do you have privacy policies in place? Do you communicate and enforce those policies within your organization? Get all employees to know about it.
  2. Spring clean your folders and databases! Do you know where personal data is stored? Do you know about your inoperative storage devices? Get rid of unnecessary data within your organisation and save money.
  3. Be transparent! Do you communicate how you treat your customers’ personal data? Are your privacy notices up to date and tailored to your actual data processing activities? Are you missing privacy notices? Get them refreshed and gain trust.
  4. “So test therefore, who join forever…” Do you know whom you trust with processing your company’s personal data? Do they share the same high privacy and security standards? Check, review and take actions.
  5. Listen to your gut! Do you feel uncomfortable when you hear about data protection? Smarten up! It is never too late to learn about data protection as it benefits not only yourself but also your organization.
