Raising the game of Sustainability as an organisational capability
As organisations face increasing scrutiny on sustainability, more companies recognise the value and importance of building a sustainability capability in their organisation. Sustainability capabilities in the majority of the organisation however still lacks clout and are still too fragmented.
This Strategy& study showed that only a third of the 1,640 listed companies analysed have a formal Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) role. Half of them have a sustainability function with limited remit and no direct access to the board or leadership. The gap is however closing and we are seeing the number of CSOs appointed rise considerably. Our research also shows that companies with a sustainability capability in the leadership team are better ESG performers and therefore more competitive.
