Connecting across the globe: in her second secondment with PwC, Amélie continues to learn from others and trust herself

04/04/22

Where do you come from, how long is your secondment in Switzerland, and what’s your role?

Originally, I’m from France. I moved to the US to work with PwC in New York, which was already a great experience! To double the learnings and adventures, I then moved to Zurich, where I started another three-year secondment at PwC Switzerland. In the US, I was the chief of staff of the Global Human Capital Leader for the last two years and before that, I spent almost ten years in Banking Capital Markets audit. In Switzerland, I joined the Growth and Innovation team driving our firm strategic priorities. My current focus is on ESG.

"The experiences during my secondments with PwC showed me, that I can trust my abilities, and taught me to continuously be myself, connect with new people, and learn from other perspectives and cultures."

What were your initial steps to kick off the secondment (talks with your coach, team leader, etc.)?

After Luxembourg, Paris, and New York, Zurich is the fourth PwC office that I’m lucky to work in. But no matter where I was working, the initial steps to kick off a successful engagement were the same at every place. First things: I always started by talking to my coaches and understanding their expectations, especially since my role was a new one, clarifying my job responsibilities and goals and defining my key stakeholders’ matrix. It’s also been key to understand the culture in which I operate to better adapt while I’m outside of my comfort zone. And what better way to grasp more of a firm’s culture and my tasks than through careful observations, through learning by doing, and, most importantly, by always being patient and allowing this to take as much time as needed.

What was the most special moment during your time, are there events, projects or times with colleagues that you treasure most?

Due to COVID-19, my secondment has been a bit more special this time, since I’ve been working from home most of the time. This made it more of a challenge to get to know everyone and to build connections. Looking back, I’m very proud of what we achieved as the Growth and Innovation team, by supporting the business on our strategic priorities to bring the best value to our clients – and also, by coming together as one team, despite all those special difficulties.

Is there a special experience that you didn’t expect prior to moving or that has changed your life since you moved to Switzerland?

The most special experience was, undeniably, a very personal one – I gave birth to my second boy in Zurich. And while it’s certainly not surprising that being a “super-mum” with a career needs a lot of organisation and great efficiency in all I do, it still is something else to actually go through this process, with all its ups and downs. But all in all, learning and understanding what it means being a working mother of two children under the age of two was challenging and very rewarding.

What do you take with you for your future work at PwC, what was your most important learning?

The experiences during my secondments with PwC showed me, that I can trust my abilities, and taught me to continuously be myself, connect with new people, and learn from other perspectives and cultures. Wherever I’ll go from here – I’ll take these learnings and experiences with me.
