Time to stick to our ‘yes’

Andreas Staubli CEO, PwC Switzerland 27 Sep 2021

64.1 percent of the Swiss population voted ‘yes’ to same-sex marriage. I’m incredibly pleased by this. Still, no law can create equality when we have people judging equality.

Unfortunately, this is something that happens every day, as we all have blind spots. Topics that we push out of our view, ignore or condemn – without knowing exactly how this affects the mental state of others. If we look closely, this means having to boldly question our learned definitions and opinions.

This courage is what resulted in a majority among the voters. Opening up marriage to same-sex couples is a long overdue legal recognition of love between two people of the same gender. But in my opinion, it’s not enough.

«With the announcement of the voting results, now is the time for us to seize the positive momentum. We need to identify our blind spots, change our mindset and consider situations from the other person’s perspective.»

With the announcement of the voting results, now is the time for us to seize the positive momentum. We need to identify our blind spots, change our mindset and consider situations from the other person’s perspective. This way we have a better chance of shaping a more inclusive world together. A world in which each and every one of us is treated equally – regardless of age, gender, skin colour, culture, abilities or sexual orientation, identity and expression. A world that sticks together rather than drifting apart. A world that doesn’t exclude people, but instead includes them.

At PwC we respect and value this diversity. After all, it makes our customers, our employees and us personally infinitely richer.

That’s why it’s time for us to stick to our ‘yes’.
